League Of Friends
Trolley Shop

The trolley shop had become an integral part of hospital life at Heatherwood. The willingness of the ladies had raised, much needed funds over the years. Come rain or shine, our ladies have been there.

Heroines & Long Service Awards

The league of friends trolley shop relied on the goodwill of a group of local ladies who through their friendship created and maintained a fundraising venture which was dearly loved by the patients and staff.

March 1997

The trolley shop continues to offer much needed service to the patients of Heatherwood. In 1997 members of the trolley shop completed 25 years service. A certificate of merit was awarded to the members.

Joy Cox Volunteer at Heatherwood 1962-1997.

Joy was first introduced to the league by the collector Miss Bailey who first knocked on her door, Joy had recently moved into Mill ride.

Joy offered her services to the league and along with her mother she helped packed sterile dressing kits for 10 years. The work was carried out in the nurses home by a total of twelve volunteers. Once a week for 2/1/2 hours they made up the packs. Joy has fond memories of her time at Heatherwood and remembers how strict the nurse manager was when they were packing dressings “ Have you washed your hands this morning “. Always remember this Joy recalls.

When the Maternity unit was built in 1972 and a new sterile dressing dept was created ( CSSD ) their services were no longer required. It was at this time joy was invited along with the other ladies to join the new service of the trolley shop run by May Ettridge. Sadly Joy’s mother was too old to carry out this work but Joy went onto provide twenty five years service to the trolley.

Joy retired after the her long service award in 1997 and is now living in sheltered accommodation.
